CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The camping ground is a one-day journey from the village, and we end up reaching it around the afternoon the next day since we’re all tired. It’s Kathleen who spots it as we’re struggling with a very stubborn thicket that refuses to let us through.

“Wait, what’s that?”

One glance has us all ducking down. The camping spot is not an open ground, but the trees are definitely thinner around there. I can see two tents pitched up. However, they seem to be empty. My attention wanders around, looking for the enemy, and I see a familiar face.

Jesse is sitting against a tree, his eyes lowered, a gag on his mouth. His hands and feet have been chained, and there are two men guarding him. My hands tremble.

“He’s okay.”

“If you call that okay,” Quill mutters. “He looks like he’s lost weight, and his color is off.”

I swallow, my voice hard, “He alive and that’s what’s important right now.”

“What about Rachel?” Beth asks warily. “I don’t see her anywhere.”

She’s right.

I look around, and there’s no sign of her. More than that, aside from four people in total, the camp is empty.

“I mean, it is weird that they made a campsite so early on in the day,” Isabel whispers.

“She said she had to meet somebody here, right?” My eyes are fixed on Jesse. “Maybe she’s gone to meet him.”

“I don’t know,” Isabel murmurs. “It all looks too convenient. Maybe we should wait.”

“Wait for what?” I snap. “For more of them to arrive. It’s four against six right now. Our odds are good.”

Isabel glares at me, gesturing with her hand. “They can fully shift into whatever they are! Have you ever seen a vampire or a werewolf at full strength? Have you gone against a werewolf in animal form? They’re ten times stronger than whatever you can imagine. The smart thing would be to assess the situation before we dive in.”

“For how long?” I stare at her. “Until the entire campsite is overcrowded, or until they begin packing up to leave?”

Isabel doesn’t have an answer to that.

I turn my attention back to the clearing. The two guards are standing alert while the other two men are talking, relaxed.

“What do you guys think?” I look at Quill and Beth.

Quill looks cautious. “Isabel has a point. It’s pretty odd that no one is around.”

“We don’t even know their numbers,” Beth points out slowly. “But Rachel isn’t here, so maybe there are more.”

Quill makes a sound in the back of his throat. “I like the numbers right now. If we take them by surprise, we’ll be able to get away quickly.”

Isabel looks stressed, and Anderson looks between us. “So, what are we doing?”

There’s a long silence and then Kathleen says, “I like the numbers right now too. Less damage.”

Beth nods.

It’s four against one.

Anderson shrugs. “I don’t care. I just want to be done with this.”

I let out a shaky breath before turning my attention back to the campsite. “Alright, there are six of us. So, we divide into groups of two.
